Mackays Department Stores, Glasgow    1987 – 1988

Branch Manager – Berwick Upon Tweed Branch

  • Managed a department store with £½million annual turnover and a staff of 25.
  • Significantly improved branch turnover, with revised store layout and stock displays.

Relocated and renamed, Mackays of Paisley moved to Inchinnan and are now known as M & Co. I applied to join the company at floor level, but my potential was recognised early and I was shipped off to Glasgow and Edinburgh for an intensive management training course of six months, then given my own store to manage in Berwick-upon-Tweed. Talk about being dropped in at the deep-end!

Retail wasn’t for me, however. Long hours, the lack of control over sales (you had to rely on the public to walk in before you could sell them anything) and the fact I had to work on Xmas Day, my birthday, preparing for the sales!
